In Conversation with Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., Hip Hop Caucus founder

Climate change is exacerbating long-standing systemic inequities.
Symptoms of these disparities are seen in North Carolina, for example. There, after sustained reporting on climate science, a state legislative Climate Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan  explicitly mentions climate justice and underserved communities and explains how already vulnerable communities are disproportionately affected by climate change. Climate change is unequally felt in Inuit communities, where the demand for cheap hydropower continues the cultural and environmental degradation triggered by colonialism. Forms of environmental racism are evident in the overrepresentation of brownfields in Black, brown, and poor communities.

Rooted in Race and Class: Intersections in Climate Stories

Rooted in Race and Class: Intersections in Climate Stories. Climate change has increasingly disrupted life across the globe with hurricanes, floods, and, as Pulitzer Center grantees have recently reported, disease. As we learn more about the science behind these extreme weather events and the destruction of land, it becomes clear that Black, brown, and Indigenous communities are hugely affected by environmental issues. In this panel, Pulitzer Center grantees will explore how stories deeply rooted in race and class issues are also environment stories.
This session is part of the 2021 Pulitzer Center Conference Environment (Re)Defined. A full list of the conference events can be found here. To sign up for this panel individually, click here.

Us and Them: How Soviet-era Thinking Divided Immigrants Over Trump

Article

Belonging to groups is human. Like everyone, former Soviet Union immigrants living in the U.S. look for a common denominator over which to bond, particularly on social media. For many since 2016, it has been and continues to be Donald Trump.
Collectively battered and betrayed by the iron fist of a totalitarian state, hundreds of thousands of Soviets fled to the U.S. throughout the 20th century. Under the USSR, they had endured class reductionism and communal micromanagement, and had been conditioned to view democratic values as government control as a threat to individualism. Thousands immigrated during the Ronald Reagan presidency, thanks to his push for it, and have only voted Republican since. Up to 65 percent of Russian-speaking immigrants have voted red in general elections since 2000, according ....

The dramatist died Friday morning, as confirmed by publicist Rick Miramontez.
“Arthur was one of the most uncompromisingly original writers that America ever produced,” Maury Yeston, Kopit’s longtime friend and collaborator, said. Yeston served as composer on a number of Kopit’s works, including the musicals “Phantom” and “Nine.”
Yeston added, “A genuine born playwright, his work possesses the kind of universality that is understood by the entire human race, across all cultures and languages. The worlds he created come to life inside the minds of every audience member who has the good fortune of attending one of his shows. But his greatest trait even beyond his enviable brilliance was a generosity that knew no bounds.” ....

Shooting Midnight Cowboy: Art, Sex, Loneliness, Liberation, and the Making of a Dark Classic

The director was an insecure taskmaster whose most recent movie had bombed. The producer was a lifelong depressive whose last film had also flopped. The screenwriter was a self-destructive alcoholic, the two lead actors relatively untested newcomers.
Collectively, they were to make a movie based on a bleak novel that had sold poorly and was mostly ignored by critics. ....
