Improving the East Verde River

I love stream improvements. Some are quite simple in design, while others require a great deal of work to install. They are all helpful for fish and fishers.
Trout benefit from these structures as they improve conditions in streams. Sometimes their purpose is to narrow the creek to increase depth, while other improvements provide cover, or enhance poor habitat.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) has installed stream improvements on several Rim Country streams over the years, so I am always on the lookout for them when fishing. I know these structures are a great attractor for fish, so I spend extra time fishing around them. If I am not careful in my approach, they are also the first place that trout will swim to seek cover if they have been cruising in the open water nearby. ....

UK Gold: The hunt for the precious metal has returned

The view from Cadair Idris, a mountain at the southern end of Snowdonia National Park near the town of Dolgellau, which sits in the crook of a belt of gold-bearing rock

In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, miners are looking to the hills and mountains for viable gold deposits. Laura Cole asks why the hunt for the yellow metal has returned to the United Kingdom
Pubs are a good place to overhear tales about gold in the valley. Roger Marr runs the Cross Keys Inn in the former slate town of Dolgellau, north Wales, and every so often, an amateur gold panner shows up at his bar, raising a hand and tilting it so as to show off a ring between sips of beer. ‘They’ll make one from melted-down pieces they find in the rivers,’ Marr says, ‘but it can take years to find enough of ....

Caldera chronicles: Small crystals record Yellowstone's volcanic past | Montana Untamed

Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles is a weekly column written by scientists and collaborators of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. This week s contribution is from Mark Stelten, research geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
Yellowstone National Park and its world-famous hydrothermal system are the result a long and dynamic volcanic history that spans millions of years. Yellowstone’s landscape is a reflection of explosive eruptions that produced large basin-shaped depressions referred to as calderas and viscous rhyolite lava flows that produced the broad plateaus.
Over the past 50 years scientists have been piecing together the volcanic events that have shaped Yellowstone into the natural wonder it is today. Due to this work, we now have a very good understanding of the major events that occurred at Yellowstone and, importantly, we know when these events occurred. This allows us to not only understand how Yellowstone came to be, but also to help anticipate what ....

Young Life: Travel through time with fossils at Stratford Hall

By COLLETTE CAPRARA
FOR THE FREE LANCE-STAR
Each year, hundreds of visitors explore Stratford Hall, the home of four generations of the famed Lee Family, including the only two brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence and heroes of the American Revolution and Civil War. Now, through online and livestreamed programming, the site is expanding its educational opportunities by highlighting its features of nature as well as its historical importance.
The foremost feature of Stratford Hall, which presents a geographical phenomenon that exists in only a handful of other sites in the world, are the cliffs that tower 120 feet above the Potomac shoreline. The cliffs contain fossils and evidence of life that provide a virtual diary of the area dating back 17 million years and indicate a sea filled with ancient creatures, including saltwater crocodiles, sea turtles, rays, whales and sharks, and a forested coastline similar to South Carolina. ....
