San Francisco, built on a series of hills, has been laced with tunnels for many, many decades. Some are heavily used, some less frequently, some have completely vanished from the scene and some never made it off the drawing boards.
For our purposes, it is necessary to exclude most sewage tunnels yes, they exist and they are certainly the most common form of tunnel beneath our streets but here, we will focus on those that were designed for legal public access by railroads, vehicles, and/or pedestrians. ....

The author is on the mark with “Police killings of Black people are lynchings” (Letters, April 17). The Black killings going on in our country are outrageous, and the author is right to call it contemporary lynchings. I have learned there is an Emmett Till Antilynching Act that got passed in the House recently, and has been stalled in the Senate by Sen. Rand Paul. Let us all join together, to get this senator removed from Congress, and send a big message across our country, that these acts by police are not tolerated. We are democracy for all people and our future depends on us working together as one people. So be it. ....

Fernando Nelson was the pioneer residential builder in the Richmond District whose quality construction set a standard of excellence and affordability that drew hundreds of families out beyond the cemeteries to make their homes in this emerging neighborhood in the early 20th century. Because of his influence in those early years of development, he should be recognized as the Father of the Richmond District.
By the time Nelson came to the Richmond District, he was a respected contractor who had built a number of quality homes in Noe Valley, upper Castro, and Duboce Park. ....
