WTF: Why Do So Many Vermont Beers Come in 16-Ounce Cans?

The beer case at City Market, Onion River Co-op
In 2011, John and Jen Kimmich, owners of the Alchemist, began building a production brewery to package their beers for retail sale. And they made a decision that some in the craft beer industry thought was strange: They built a canning line.
At the time, John Kimmich recalled in a recent interview, craft beer came almost exclusively in 12- or 22-ounce bottles; cans were associated with mass-produced beers. He knew of just a few other breweries in the U.S. using 16-ounce cans, but he had fond memories of drinking pounders while growing up in Pittsburgh. ....

From Firepits to Igloos, How to Dine Outside in Chilly Vermont

The firepit on Juniper s patio
On a 9 degree day in Burlington, Dan Bornstein and his girlfriend took a seat on the patio at Zero Gravity Craft Brewery to drink a couple of beers. The Pine Street brewery has installed electric heaters above the tables in the outdoor space it shares with the Great Northern restaurant.
I have no problem with it, Bornstein, 28, said of drinking a beer in single-digit weather. I m a local and a snowboarder. They have heated seating, too. That s pretty awesome.
A Burlington resident who works in transportation logistics, Bornstein said he s staying away from indoor dining establishments during the pandemic. But having an outdoor beer on a sunny day is enjoyable even in winter. ....

Pressure Cooker: The Impacts of COVID-19 on Restaurant Workers

Maya s Kitchen
Maya Gurung-Subba and her husband, Suk Subba, had high hopes for 2020. On January 24, 2020, their small restaurant in Burlington s New North End, Maya s Kitchen, celebrated a year in business. They had developed a loyal following for their regional Himalayan dishes, including chicken choila with chickpeas and crispy rice, fried pork-chile momos served in a spicy tomato sauce, and chunky vegetable curry.
The couple did everything themselves: sourcing specialty ingredients, cooking, washing the dishes. Maya s Kitchen broke even by the end of its first year, a notable achievement in the notoriously tough restaurant sector.
It was really good in 2019. It was really, really busy, Gurung-Subba said. Our big American dream in 2020: We were hoping to buy a house. ....

Zero Gravity introduces non-alcoholic IPA

Mon, 01/04/2021 - 5:04am tim
Vermont Business Magazine Burlington based brewery Zero Gravity, in collaboration with Kris Nelson of Citizen Cider, is launching a brand new non-alcoholic beer called Rescue Club. Rescue Club IPA is a non-alcoholic beer of the highest quality born from New England’s craft brewing culture.
This IPA is not like the non-alcoholic beers you’ve had before. Rescue Club said that it uses a proprietary technique to deliver a beer that is free of alcohol but full of flavor.
It offers a non-alcoholic option that doesn’t sacrifice the refreshing hop character you crave.
Rescue Club IPA is brewed by Rescue Club Brewing Company, a partnership between Zero Gravity Craft Brewery and Citizen Cider Co-Founder Kris Nelson. ....
