Yvette Herrell calls for New Mexico to oppose Biden's energy policies


U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-NM), New Mexico’s only Republican in Congress, continued in the charge against energy policies enacted by President Joe Biden’s administration which Herrell said threatened her home state more than most in the U.S.
Herrell joined a forum held Friday by Republican members of the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources which pointed to purported negative impacts of Biden’s policies on state economies and America’s oil and gas industry.
Upon taking office, Biden via executive order placed a temporary pause on new federal oil and gas land leases, while calling on the Interior Department to review its federal energy policies. ....

As Don Schreiber stands in the front yard of his ranch near Farmington, New Mexico, he no longer counts cattle he counts gas wells. And he sees 10.
“That’s just the ones that you can see,” he says. There are more nearby, but they are hidden by trees.
Schreiber’s ranch sits on 5,760 acres in the middle of the San Juan Basin, the smaller of the state’s two oil and gas producing regions. Smaller, but not small. There are more than 22,000 oil and gas wells there, and 122 of those are on his land, all of them pulling up natural gas. There are 30 wells within a mile of his house. ....

Local environmental oversight bill heads to New Mexico House Floor


Opponents contended the bill would create regulatory uncertainty by causing federal and state laws to contradict.
Senate Bill 8 sponsored by a group of Democrat senators and representatives was intended to alter language in state statutes that require any state environmental regulations by “no more’ stringent than federal requirements.
SB 8 was passed by the House Judiciary Committee on an 8-4 vote and could be heard next on the House Floor.
It would amend both the state’s Air Quality and Hazardous Waste acts to allow the state or local agencies to adopt stricter requirements under the laws for air or hazardous waste pollution. ....

New Mexico Clean Fuel Standard Act headed to vote on Senate Floor


A bill that would establish a “clean fuel standard” aimed at reducing polluting carbon emissions from fuels like gasoline or diesel used in transportation was passed by the Senate Tax, Business and Transportation Committee Thursday and could next face a vote on the Senate Floor.
Senate Bill 11, known as the Clean Fuel Standard Act, previously passed the Senate Conservation Committee 6-2 vote, and was granted a “do pass” recommendation by the tax committee on a vote of 7-4.
During Thursday hearing, Sen. Mimi Steward (D-17) who sponsored the bill said the concept of a clean fuel standard came from the New Mexico Environment Department – part of the Climate Change Task Force created to reduce pollution in the state – as a way to curb air pollution while also diversifying the economy. ....
