Mirroring national trends, local cases of a coronavirus-linked inflammatory syndrome in kids have risen after a surge in infections in the Bay Area in December and January.
The syndrome, called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, is a condition in which various parts of the body become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal organs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ....

UCSF Health Leader Mark Laret to Retire at Year's End

Mark R. Laret, president and chief executive officer of UCSF Health, who grew and transformed UC San Francisco’s multibillion-dollar clinical enterprise in an ever-shifting health care landscape for more than two decades, has announced that he will retire from the University of California on Dec. 31, 2021.
A nationally recognized leader in health care, Laret joined UCSF in 2000, in the wake of a three-year merger with Stanford Hospital that had left UCSF Medical Center in challenging financial and administrative straits. Under Laret’s deft leadership, a new Medical Center executive team was recruited, guided by a values system he implemented called PRIDE (Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence), which has since been adopted across the entire University.  ....

VA workers feel ‘shut out’ of COVID planning

Employees across various Department of Veterans Affairs facilities are being kept out of the loop as their leaders make plans to address COVID-19 needs and staffing challenges, American Federation of Government Employees officials said on a Dec. 16 press call.
“The leadership keeps the union out of all decisions, no pre-decisional [consultation] at all. We don’t know how many masks we have; we do not know the amount of COVID [positive] employees running around,” said Regina Smith, president of AFGE Local 424 at the Baltimore VAMC. ....
