The Gila National Forest, Wilderness Ranger District currently has one temporary additional fuelwood and waste log area available on the district. According to a release, the material was derived from a Wildland Urban Interface thinning and restoration project implemented through a Collaborative Forest Restoration Project to improve forest health, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce hazardous fuels in the Gatton’s Park area. The wood is waste product and is all ponderosa pine and the logs are approximately 30 feet long and can be bucked up into smaller loads. The wood is located at the junction of NM Hwy 35 and FSR 4078U across the highway from Terry Canyon. This is the entrance to the Celebration dispersed camping area. This ponderosa pine is free and is available on a first-come/first-serve basis. You must be able to load this yourself. ....

Local Scouts from Troop 114 volunteered their time to the Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District by working on various trails. The service project was part of an Eagle Scout project planned, developed, and led by Scout, Kevin Peterson. In addition, Scouts Logan Dunlap and Max Johnson were responsible for trash pickup, trail improvement, fence repair around the Big Tree, and widening trails where needed. The project took place from December through March at the Dragonfly Trailhead, the Big Tree Trailhead, and the Big Tree area. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Scouts program. Since its inception in 1911, only 4% of Scouts have earned this rank after a lengthy review process. ....
The school says that the event will be held outdoors with limited capacity at Ben Altamirano Stadium. The university says the in-person ceremony will use an e-ticket system. During the event, the college will require masks for everyone and enforce the state’s public health orders with social distancing. WNMU says the event will also follow New Mexico Higher Education Department guidelines for commencement ceremonies. Graduates participating virtually will be represented on a large screen in Ben Altamirano Stadium during the event as was seen during virtual ceremonies of the past year. WNMU sets Remembrance March Western New Mexico University Veterans Affairs has organized a march commemorating the Bataan Death March, the forced 65-mile journey 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war embarked on in April 1942. The event is being held in honor the military men and women, past and present, who give their all in service of their community and nation. Beginning and ending on the WNMU campus, participants can walk or run their choice of distances and routes, either for themselves or in memory of a loved one who served. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, in the WNMU Fine Arts Center Theatre parking lot and ends in Ben Altamirano Stadium. ....
