Featuring contributions from scholars representing a range of disciplines, ‘Timescales: Thinking Across Ecological Temporalities,’ is an outgrowth of the Penn Program for Environmental Humanities.
For a geologist, 200 million years may seem like the blink of an eye. To a historian, the
18th century is still highly relevant. And to researchers grappling with climate change, future scenarios provide a compelling reason to act now.
In the new book, “Timescales: Thinking Across Ecological Temporalities,” Bethany Wiggin of the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities (PPEH) and co-editors Carolyn Fornoff and Patricia Eunji Kim, both alumnae of Penn and PPEH, bring together reflections from experts in a variety of academic disciplines on the relationships between past, present, and future and what that means for a planet in crisis. ....

Penn senior named a 2021 Gates Cambridge Scholar
Senior Tathagat Bhatia has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in history and philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge in England. Bhatia, from India, is majoring in science, technology and society in the College of Arts & Sciences.
From Lucknow, India, Bhatia is Penn’s 33rd Gates Scholar since the program’s beginning in 2001 and the second this year. Bhatia is one of an additional 50 recipients worldwide chosen from 30 countries for a total of 74 Scholars, announced on Wednesday. The scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge for as long as four years as well as additional discretionary funding. Bhatia joins 2015 graduate Joyce Kim, one of 24 from the United States to be named in the first cohort of 2021 Gates Cambridge Scholars announced in February. ....

Bringing the humanities into climate education
Senior Tsemone Ogbemi is sharing the important role of the arts in comprehending climate through her work at the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities and in an environmental conference she is presenting at this week.

A year ago, Penn senior Tsemone Ogbemi had what she describes as a “pretty average” way of thinking about climate change.
“In my personal life I try to recycle, reduce the waste I produce, eat a mostly plant-based diet, and things like that,” she says. “As an English major I’d always felt my contribution to anything related to climate would be minor.” ....
