The recent revelation that a former Philadelphia official ordered remains of MOVE members destroyed decades after their deaths and without notifying family has shocked many.
Current state laws, however, don t make what happened in the city coroner s office illegal and won’t prevent it from happening again.
The controversy over the handling of the remains of victims of the 1985 MOVE bombing highlights Pennsylvania’s vague regulations involving unclaimed bodies and remains, which leaves decisions about what happens to them in the hands of local coroners and medical examiners. 
The president of an organization representing Pennsylvania coroners would like to see legislative changes making identifying next-of-kin easier and more timely, which would prevent cases from falling through cracks.  ....

The city requested a jury trial, much as Lockett’s lawsuit did.
Lockett, who is Black, claimed in his October filing that Lt. Tom Smith, who oversaw the sergeant in Lockett’s patrol squad, faced no discipline after in 2015 making “racial comments online about various Black people, including referring to then-First Lady Michelle Obama as an ‘ugly chimp’ and calling a black Nebraska state senator a ‘scrawny little monkey’.” ....
