East Kentucky Science Center & Varia Planetarium Appoints New Director

Big Sandy Community & Technical College announces the East Kentucky Science Center & Varia Planetarium (EKSC) has identified its next director, Chrysta Ghent of Jersey City, New Jersey. Ghent will begin her tenure at EKSC in early August.
Ghent is a passionate and creative science educator with over ten years of experience in planetarium education, informal science education, and science education research. Her specialties include astronomy education, educator professional development, and curriculum development.
Ghent has several publications to her credit and is pursuing a doctoral program in curriculum and instruction at Pennsylvania State University. Ghent’s experience in grant-writing and creative ideas for fundraising will make her a great asset to the Science Center, BSCTC, and the community. ....

BSCTC Launches Cybersecurity Program

Big Sandy Community & Technical College has launched a cybersecurity program to meet the needs of an ever-growing demand for high-paying jobs in the computer technology field.
Cybersecurity is necessary for every aspect of our society. Organizations that do electronic business are required to keep the information they handle secure from hackers and others. Many organizations are just identifying the need for cybersecurity professionals. Data and networks must be secured to do business in the world today. Companies often hire consulting agencies or hire cybersecurity specialists to secure networks.
BSCTC’s cybersecurity program prepares students to design, develop, and maintain secure computer systems and provide security for the users they service. Students in this program will study cybersecurity related to hardware, software, user, and data security. Tracks are available in Secure coding, network defense, cyber forensics, and cyber science. ....

Like many new college students, Kaitlyn Campbell Wright (19) went in not knowing what she wanted to do with her life.
The Prestonsburg native was on her way to earning an associate degree from Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) when she was shown a video of a watercolor demonstration from one of her professors. 
I thought it was the coolest thing ever and I wanted to try it, she said
. So, I went and bought the worst paint and paper ever and sat down to follow a YouTube tutorial. That s how I taught myself to paint.   ....

Follow the muse: Former Raceland teacher turns retirement into writing career

ASHLAND Teaching at Raceland High School in the early 1960s launched the education career of Marie Parsons. Retirement launched her writing career.
The Pike County native recently released a book of poems called “An Echo In The Wind,” but it’s not her first book. She authored a novel titled “The Devil’s Back” in 2015.
“I retired in 2003 and for several years didn’t know what to do with the rest of my life. Eating and traveling were not quite enough,” she said. “A friend got me interested in attending the Appalachian Writers Workshop in Hindman. I began writing memoir, but soon discovered I didn’t like revealing so much about myself. Then I turned to short stories, and before I knew it, the stories had morphed into a novel.” ....
