WINTER STORM UPDATES: Jefferson City School District, Columbia Public Schools among those canceling Tuesday classes

The Jefferson City School District and Columbia Public Schools were among several in Mid-Missouri that called off Tuesday sessions by mid-afternoon Monday as snow continued to blanket the region and temperatures hovered near zero degrees. Fulton Public Schools also called off school Tuesday.
At least two dozen area schools had canceled their Tuesday classes by 2 p.m. Monday. CPS alerted families just before 3 p.m. that it would not be in session Tuesday, with JC Schools putting out the word on Twitter about 20 minutes later. The weather also shut down area college and university campuses, pushing many classes online. Doctors offices and community organizations also had to shut their doors. ....

Missouri’s governor delivered an unprecedented State of the State Address on Wednesday afternoon in Jefferson City, in the Missouri Senate chamber.

Missouri House and Senate GOP leaders announced earlier in the day that the governor would deliver the speech in the Senate chamber. The speech is always delivered in the Missouri House chamber, across the Rotunda. House Speaker Rob Vescovo, R-Arnold, Senate President Pro Tem Dave Schatz, R-Sullivan, and other legislative leaders say the speech was moved from the House chamber to ensure that attendees could meet CDC guidelines recommending six feet of social distancing. ....

After voting not to require masks, Missouri House shuts down due to COVID-19 outbreak


The Missouri House of Representatives is not meeting this week because of an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Capitol Building, Republican leaders announced Thursday evening.
Without giving details, House Speaker Rob Vescovo, R-Arnold, Speaker Pro Tem John Wiemann, R-O’Fallon, and Majority Floor Leader Dean Plocher, R-St. Louis, issued a statement about the decision.
The Senate Republican caucus, which has 24 of the Senate’s 34 members, met Friday morning on a conference call and decided to hold session next week, Majority Leader Caleb Rowden, R-Columbia, wrote in a tweet on Friday. 
The week was already scheduled for limited floor sessions. Lawmakers generally meet Monday through Thursday each week, but both chambers were returning Tuesday because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. ....
