At its special meeting Saturday, Berkeley s Police Review Commission discussed its transition to the Police Accountability Board, or PAB. With the PAB accepting applicants from now until March 22, applicant diversity for the board, which will consist of nine members, was emphasized.
On Saturday, Berkeley’s Police Review Commission, or PRC, held a special meeting to discuss the transition to a new oversight committee, the Police Accountability Board, or PAB, for which applications are now open.
During the meeting, the PRC presented the expanded powers the PAB will hold and encouraged diversity among applicants. The commission also heard public comments from community members concerned about how racial representation of city residents will be fulfilled in the hiring process. ....

Officials voted unanimously Tuesday night to deprioritize traffic stops in Berkeley for “low-level” offenses, such as not wearing a seat belt or having expired registration tags, and focus police efforts instead on driving violations related to traffic safety.
The decision was part of a package of police reform efforts approved Tuesday night to address racial disparities in policing that have been documented in Berkeley and around the nation. A working group convened by Mayor Jesse Arreguín, composed of academics, activists, police and city officials, came ....

Berkeley City Council takes no action on BPD chief no confidence vote

After months of delay, Berkeley City Council struck down a vote of no confidence in Berkeley Police Department Chief Andrew Greenwood, citing the council’s lack of legal authority over the employment status of city department heads.
The resolution was first proposed by former Councilmember Cheryl Davila last year following a controversial statement made by Greenwood during a June city council discussion on police reform. When asked during the meeting what tear gas alternatives are available to officers as a means of crowd dispersal, Greenwood stated, “Firearms. We can shoot people,” before apologizing for the comment later in the meeting. ....

Task force created to review city's public safety policies

Applications for the Reimagining Public Safety Task Force, created in an effort to review the city’s current approach to community safety, are open and will be due Feb. 8.
The task force will consist of 17 members, with nine representatives appointed by the mayor and each member of Berkeley City Council. The Mental Health Commission, Police Review Commission and Youth Commission will each appoint one member, as will the ASUC and Berkeley Community Safety Coalition. The last three members will be selected through the application process.
“Low-income residents and communities of color, particularly queer and trans people of color, are the most impacted by traditional law enforcement practices, and historically have been excluded from policymaking and accountability processes,” said city councilmember Terry Taplin in an email. ....
