An article on Newport’s annual warrant requests $500,000 to help remediate the nearly 4-acre property on the Sugar River. Newport Town Manager Hunter Rieseberg said officials want to one day see the site used for passive recreation, such as fishing.
The mill, which dates back to the 19th century, was purchased by Christi Ambargis in 1960 and was most recently used to collect oil for a fuel-blending project. When Ambargis died in 1996, the property was transferred to his widow, who relinquished it to the town for back taxes. Letter’s argument on Newport board member falls apart
I am responding to Newport School Board member Linda Wadensten’s Forum letter (“Newport board member unwilling to collaborate,” April 12). My credibility for what I am writing comes from 10 years of School Board participation as a citizen, as a district employee and as a committee member of the School Board.
It seems easy to comply with the procedures to become a school board member. I have been through those on different occasions. Where the argument falls apart is mostly in the last paragraph, which asks: “I wonder why Bert Spaulding Sr. wanted to become a Newport School Board member.” I will note that most School Board members have children going through the district’s schools. Is that why they all ran? Spaulding ran with no bias toward his own; he ran to work hard for everyone all citizens. ....

Pandemic precautions: Voting on the Newport School District warrant on Tuesday, March 9, has been moved from the opera house to the high school because of the COVID-19 pandemic to allow for the option of drive-thru voting.
Budget: The $19.2 million proposed budget comes after the School Board cut $500,000 from the spending plan during the second part of the deliberative session on Feb. 4 after receiving comments from the public, dropping the projected tax rate increase to $1.38 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, SAU 43 Business Manager Ed Emond said. The first year of a proposed two-year contract for support staff would cost $89,000 and add 20 cents on the school tax rate. If the budget and contract are approved, the school tax rate would increase to $19.76 per $1,000 of assessed valuation and add $237 in school taxes to a proper ....
