School board race hotly contested in Bellefonte | News, Sports, Jobs

BELLEFONTE In the Bellefonte area, there’s the school board race and then there’s everything else.
For Bellefonte Area School Board, six cross-filed candidates are vying for four nominations on each ballot: Jon Guizar, Rodney Musser, Jordan Emely, Jack Bechdel II, Jeffrey Steiner and Andrea Royer.
Bechdel, Guizar, Royer and Steiner are running on the well-advertised Win4Bellefonte campaign. According to its website, www.win4bellefonte.com, is a “bipartisan community organization supporting candidates that will encourage excellence, pride and tradition for the Bellefonte Area School District.” Guizar is the current BASD school board president. Steiner is the board’s former vice president. ....

Deadline to register to vote is today | News, Sports, Jobs

LOCK HAVEN It’s deadline day.
Today is the deadline to sign up for Pennsylvania residents wishing to vote in the May 18 municipal primary election.
On Saturday, Clinton County Government posted a reminder on its Facebook page. It read:
The Deadline to Register to vote or to update your Voter Registration before the Municipal Primary Election is Monday, May 3, 2021. The Clinton County Board of Elections encourages all eligible Clinton County voters to make sure they are registered and that the information is up to date.
Voters can choose the online voter registration system at www.votespa.com or obtain a copy of the voter registration form at the Clinton County Piper Building located at 2 Piper Way in Lock Haven. ....

Some of the between two and three tons of old electronic equipment recycled at the Electronics Recycle opportunity this past week is shown, along with some of the volunteers who helped collect it.
BELLEFONTE The Bellefonte Intervalley Area Chamber of Commerce and Black Hoof Technology partnered to provide an Electronics Recycle opportunity at the Bellefonte Armory complex on April 23 and 24.
The event was designed as a free public service to keep old computers and related equipment out of the landfill and recycle them for productive use. The event was held at the Bellefonte Armory, courtesy of the Bellefonte Borough, and with the help of volunteers from the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology, the Chamber of Commerce, Black Hoof Technology, Downtown Bellefonte Incorporated, the local U.S. Army Recruiting Company, Timberland Federal Credit Union, and Bellefonte Borough Council. Thompson resigns from Bellefonte Council | News, Sports, Jobs

BELLEFONTE Bellefonte Borough Council has an open seat.
At Monday night’s borough council meeting, council accepted the resignation of member Gina Thompson. Thompson, who represented the south ward, recently accepted a part-time position in the borough as HARB’s Zoning and Planning administrator.
Borough manager Ralph Stewart explained Thompson’s resignation letter.
“Gina is taking a position in the borough,” Stewart said. “We did advertise, just like we do with all of our positions that go to the outside. We had one applicant and it turned out to be Gina … she has some very good experience.”
Because the position with HARB represents a conflict of interest, Thompson was forced to give up her seat on council. ....

'It's a Great Home for Us.' Centre Crest Residents Move to New Facility in College Township

Starting at 8 a.m. on a beautiful Wednesday, 12 vans began moving residents of Centre Crest nursing facility in Bellefonte to their new home, Centre Care Rehabilitation and Wellness Services in College Township.
The new $45 million facility, located on Persia Road off of Benner Pike, welcomed residents for the first time after about five years of planning and a year and a half of construction.
“It’s a great home for us and the new people that come in,” Charlie Myers, president of the facility’s Residence Council, said. “I think we’re going to be happy with it.”
With a capacity of 240 beds, the new 135,000-square foot Centre Care facility is about twice the size of the 83-year-old Centre Crest on East Howard Street. A central building is flanked by two wings and in addition to traditional long-term care, it has three specialty “neighborhoods” for memory care, high acuity care and short-term rehab.
