Alaska is renowned for its postcard pretty mountains, vast spaces and massive earthquakes.
But not many people know the highest tsunami wave ever accurately measured - at 524-metres - occurred in Alaska.
It happened 63 years ago during a tsunami - an unusual wave that is usually generated by either a large undersea earthquake; volcanic eruptions; landslides that fall into the sea or that occur underwater; and asteroids.
Evidence of the destruction caused by the Lituya Bay, Alaska tsunami can still be seen from space. ....

New Zealand issues tsunami alert after 7.7-magnitude earthquake near New Caledonia

New Zealand and Australia have cancelled tsunami warnings after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday.
The earthquake was recorded near the Loyalty Islands and New Caledonia, the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS) said.
The epicentre was located around 400 kilometres southeast of the Loyalty Islands archipelago and about 430 kilometres from Vanuatu, USGS added.
The National Emergency Management Agency in New Zealand had issued a national advisory for tsunami activity, but the warning was later cancelled with no immediate reports of damage.
Based on the most recent modelling and decreasing tsunami amplitudes at North Cape, Great Barrier Island and the East Cape, the tsunami threat has passed for New Zealand, the agency said. ....

Early warning of disasters: Facts and figures

Early warning of disasters: Facts and figures
, and what accounts for the gap between warning and action.
Through history disasters have destroyed lives and livelihoods, killing people and damaging homes and businesses. Disasters in the past 35 years have taken an estimated 2.5 million lives and cost more than US$1.5 billion, mainly in developing countries. [1]
Disasters result from natural and biological hazards (floods or infectious diseases, for example) as well as complex sociopolitical emergencies and industrial hazards (droughts or radioactive leaks).
The extent of the damage caused by a hazard is related not just to its severity, but also to the capacity of people living in disaster-prone areas to prepare for and resist it. Efforts to reduce disaster risk have therefore focused, in part, on developing early warning systems to provide timely and effective information that enables people and communities to respond when a disaster hits.   ....
