When Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury announced on Feb. 18 that the European OEM was reversing years of efforts to outsource aerostructures and would keep Premium Aerotec and Stelia Aerospace within the group, stakeholders likely breathed a sigh of relief.
At least those assets will not be shopped around anymore, a rare reprieve from the ongoing flood of aerostructure divestitures that started before COVID-19 but has picked up pace. For anyone else trying to offload related assets, however, do not bother with Airbus. Aerostructures will be a core capability for Airbus, the CEO said, but it is not eyeing mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to build them up. ....

Speakers at a major local aviation suppliers conference Feb. 17 were sharply divided over how quickly the aerospace industry can climb out of the depths of the current pandemic-driven downturn.
“We are at exactly the low point and it will get better from here,” predicted Richard Aboulafia, an aviation analyst with the Teal Group for 30 years. “Good times begin to come back in late 2021 and are really back in late 2022.” ....

Analysts urge Boeing: launch a mid-market jet

By Jon Hemmerdinger2021-02-10T21:33:00+00:00
Aerospace analysts are increasingly in agreement that Boeing must build a new narrowbody jet – lest it lose a huge chunk of valuable market share to competitor Airbus.
Speaking during PNAA Advance, an event hosted by the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance, the analysts expressed the same sentiment: Boeing has little choice but to strike back against Airbus.

“If Boeing does nothing, this is an enormous chunk of the market that is lost to them,” Teal Group analyst Richard Aboulafia said on 10 February. “There’s a huge threat here, but also a huge opportunity.” ....

Air travel could fully recover by late 2022: analyst

By Jon Hemmerdinger2021-02-10T18:53:00+00:00
A leading aerospace analyst is predicting that airline passenger traffic will return to 2019 levels by the end of 2022 – one to two years sooner than predicted by others.
Teal Group’s Richard Aboulafia believes a 2022 recovery is possible thanks to the efficacy of vaccines, the relative health of economies and high rates of personal savings.
“Teal Group’s position now is that we get back to a 2019 traffic peak by late 2022,” Aboulafia says during PNAA Advance, a virtual event hosted by the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance. “I’m an optimist.”
