Local Families are Facing Food Insecurities: You Can Help


Prior to the COIVID-19 pandemic there were families throughout the Berkshires including the southern Berkshires that were facing food insecurities. As you would expect, when you add on the pandemic including the loss of income, the number of families facing shortages of food skyrocketed.
On a recent edition of the WSBS Let s Talk program, we spoke with Pat Salvi from Sheffield Kiwanis. Pat talked about the need for food in our community which became greater during the pandemic. For example, Pat mentioned that in present times the People s Pantry in Great Barrington is now serving up to 300 people each week. It s difficult for the pantry to keep food on the shelves as they constantly need to replenish. How can they can keep a robust supply at their location? Boxed out: Postal customers across Berkshires fume over delivery delays


“Don’t worry, it’s in the mail.” That assurance, true or not, used to mean delivery was near. Not this year.
Unprecedented delays in U.S. Postal Service operations have kept customers on edge for weeks, especially those sending or receiving packages. Today, the traditional finish line for Christmas mailing, The Eagle presents findings of the newspaper’s call to readers to share stories about the fate of packages shipped through the Postal Service.
Eighty-four people completed the nonscientific survey. Overall, 57 percent said they were “completely dissatisfied” with how the service handled package shipments this season; an additional 26.2 percent were somewhat dissatisfied. Only two said they were “completely satisfied.” By its nature, the survey was more likely to bring accounts of missing or lost packages than accolades.
