OSU Extension's Pat Brinkman: Cicadas Can be a Tasty Treat

Jun 15, 2021
Yes, it is true. Cicadas are among those insects that are safe to eat.
And if you are among those who want to give them a try, this is the summer to do it. The periodical cicada known as Brood X will arrive in the millions in the Midwest over the next few weeks as the temperatures warm. Brood X is one of 12 periodical cicadas that emerge every 17 years, from mid-May to late June. Another three broods emerge every 13 years, primarily in southern states.
Brood X includes three species–Magicicada septendecim, Magicicada cassini, and Magicicada septendecula–each of which will come up at different times during the spring, says David Shetlar, a professor emeritus of entomology with Ohio State University Extension, the outreach arm of The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). ....

Some producers may have other produce which they grew in a green house or purchased from someone in a southern state. These can be delicious too.
To locate a farmers’ market near you check here. Most farmer’s markets have other items for sale too, such as baked goods, honey, jams/jelly, soap, plants, meat, eggs, cheese and others. There has been gift items, jewelry, homemade cards and décor items at a local farmers’ market I visit.
Some farmers’market require you to order ahead for pick up. Other ones are open for people to walk around and check out what is available. ....

Rick Huber, left, former Chautauqua County Mental Health Association executive director is pictured in this 2018 file photo during a retirement celebration.
During his tenure as executive director of the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County, Rick Huber understood all too well the significant disadvantage he and other counselors seeking to help those struggling with personal demons faced on a daily basis. It is a large part of the reason why the job he held for 13 years consumed and defined him.
“The drug dealers have a better outreach than any place I’ve ever seen … They’re on call 24-7,” he said this week in a phone interview. “You can call a drug dealer at 2 o’clock in the morning, not have money, but they’ll know when you get your check and they’ll bring the drugs to your house. Call a mental health clinic or a drug and alcohol place between 9 and 4 and they’ll give you an appointment a month out.” ....

Apr 30, 2021
This is the season for grilling out. Whether you prepare a whole meal on the grill or just part, make sure your cookout is safe by following these tips:
C = Clean your grill by using a wire brush and wiping down with a cloth to make sure you don’t leave any bristles behind. Avoid leaving the charred buildup on your grill which may transfer to your food.
