During his tenure as executive director of the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County, Rick Huber understood all too well the significant disadvantage he and other counselors seeking to help those struggling with personal demons faced on a daily basis. It is a large part of the reason why the job he held for 13 years consumed and defined him.
“The drug dealers have a better outreach than any place I’ve ever seen … They’re on call 24-7,” he said this week in a phone interview. “You can call a drug dealer at 2 o’clock in the morning, not have money, but they’ll know when you get your check and they’ll bring the drugs to your house. Call a mental health clinic or a drug and alcohol place between 9 and 4 and they’ll give you an appointment a month out.” ....

The Virtual Conference Will Focus on Mental Health and Chemical Dependency Resources in Chautauqua County and Region.
MAYVILLE, N.Y.: The Hope and Healing Conference of Western New York (WNY) will be held virtually on Thursday, June 10, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The online event will include keynote speakers and educational webinars on mental health, chemical dependency, and other wellness topics that are available in Chautauqua County and our region as well as community resources. This year’s conference will explore the theme “The Art of Hope and Healing,” focusing on self-care and creativity in prevention, treatment and recovery. ....

Luis Rosa has a way with words and people. That’s because many of those words through his locally renowned quick wit often make those around him laugh and feel at ease.
It’s that persona that made Luis an ideal certified peer specialist with the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County. “Luis had a way of making everyone smile and lit up a room anytime he walked in,” said Jenny Rowe, the Mental Health Association’s chief financial officer. ....
