Masterpieces of Japanese art handed down by the imperial family for generations are to be designated as national treasures for the first time.
They include “Chinese Lions,” which is painted on a folding screen by Kano Eitoku (1543-1590) and regarded as one of his most important works, and “The Mongol Invasion,” a picture scroll dating from the Kamakura Period (1185-1333).
The Council for Cultural Affairs submitted a report July 16 to the education minister proposing that four paintings and a work of calligraphy be given the double status of important cultural properties and national treasures. ....

OSAKA The Kintetsu 12200-series model used as limited express trains that once carried Emperor Showa and Britain s Queen Elizabeth II will make their last run Aug. 7, operator Kintetsu Railway Co. announced.
The company had been running the model famed for its signature navy blue and orange colors for special services after it was retired from regular use in February.
The 12200-series model was introduced in 1969 for use as limited express trains on the company s main routes. In total, 168 trains were manufactured until 1976, making it Kintetsu s most produced model. ....

Emperor Naruhito was caught in a conundrum when it came to wording in his speech in Japanese to declare the 2020 Tokyo Olympics open during the July 23 Opening Ceremony at the National Stadium.
The only other occasion for a summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo was 57 years ago in 1964 when Naruhito s grandfather, Emperor Showa, presided over the ceremony.
Naruhito had only that precedent to follow, but he was bothered by the use of the word “celebrating” in light of the current health crisis.
Under the Olympic Charter, the head of state of the host nation declares the Games open and wording in French and English is included in the charter outlining what should be said. ....
