The COVID-19 pandemic placed tremendous stress on the health care workforce. On Monday, the Senate held a hearing examining some of the challenges facing particularly nursing home and assisted living facility workers.
Nursing home and assisted living facility workers are being paid right now at or near the minimum wage, which for Upstate New York is $12.50 and for New York City is $15 an hour.
At the same time, across the state, fast food workers are making a minimum wage of $15 an hour.
Dora Fisher from the Health Care Association of New York State explains that many of these health care workers just simply can’t afford to stay in this line of work.

NYS Lawmakers Sponsor Bill To Create Office For The Deaf, Hard Of Hearing

5:43
There is no New York state office dedicated to serving the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Now, a few lawmakers from the Hudson Valley hope to change that.
Sean Gerlis is deaf, the third generation in his family; his son is the fourth. The West Nyack, Rockland County resident, citing statistics from a number of sources, says about 50 million people in the U.S. have some degree of hearing loss, out of a population of more than 300 million. Gerlis communicates using an American Sign Language interpreter via a video relay service. He says New York has many schools for the deaf as well as resources.

Senate One-house Budget Resolution: Leading New York Through COVID-19 & Beyond

(
Albany, NY) Today, the Senate Majority will pass its one-house budget resolution that delivers emergency aid to help New York recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and invests in a brighter, more equitable future by fully funding essential services and putting more money in the pockets of working and middle-class families. The Senate resolution increases total school aid by $5.7 billion, provides billions in residential and commercial rental and foreclosure assistance, restores critical funding to our health care system, and jumpstarts our economy with investments in transportation and small businesses. The Senate Majority’s proposal asks the wealthiest New Yorkers to pay their fair share rather than balancing the budget on the backs of working families.

Frustration is building over the pace of COVID-19 vaccinations at long-term care sites, where some homes still await first shots while fending off a virus that can devastate their residents.
The major drugstore chains tasked with giving shots in these places are far along in vaccinating nursing home residents and staff. But some other types of group residences won't receive first doses until mid-February or later, despite being among the top priorities for shots.
CVS and Walgreens have started a massive vaccination push in nearly all states, and they say they are proceeding on schedule. But resident advocates and experts are anxious about delays in delivering vaccines that have been available for more than a month.
