EDF grants support CDS work on border, COVID-19 relief in Nigeria and around the world – News

Brethren Disaster Ministries has directed grants from the Church of the Brethren Emergency Disaster Fund to COVID-19 response in Nigeria through Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) and the worldwide COVID response by Church World Service (CWS). Another grant supports CWS relief work in Indonesia and Timor-Leste following flooding. A grant also has been given to support a humanitarian response at the southern US border by Children’s Disaster Services (CDS).

A grant of $27,000 supports the CDS response at the southern US border. The growing crisis along the border and the influx of migrant families seeking asylum since the beginning of 2021 is related to the struggle with poverty and violence in Mexico and Central America that has led people to flee for decades. “On Valentine’s Day, share hearts and flowers–and do your part to prevent abuse.”
That’s the message from the World Council of Churches (WCC) for Valentine’s Day 2021, encouraging people to share new images and messages created for a special social media campaign called “Celebrate love, prevent abuse.” Other messages include “Love is kind” and “Each day, affirm respect, devotion, and love.” The messages are intended to invite reflection during a time in which “a shadow pandemic of domestic abuse and violence has risen alarmingly in conjunction with COVID-19-related lockdowns,” said a WCC release. “In response, the Thursdays in Black campaign has grown, with increasing numbers of global ambassadors speaking out, in many regions and languages, in support of a world free from rape and gender-based violence.” Campaigners are urging attention to gender-based violence and awareness of its root ....

Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) has reported on fighting between government forces and Boko Haram in the Askira Uba area of Borno State in northeast Nigeria, with many people forced to flee and at least one church member suffering gunshot wounds.
EYN president Joel S. Billi has shared encouragement with orphaned students in Chibok during a scholarship presentation by the EYN Disaster Relief Ministry. EYN also has extended educational assistance to refugees in Cameroon. ....
