Despite concerns from the community and calls from an Ohio congressman, open-air demolition began last week at the U.S. Department of Energy s former uranium enrichment plant in a southern Ohio village. The demolition in Piketon comes after the federal agency promised the community, which has experienced high cancer rates, independent testing for radiological contaminants. The results are expected to come later this year. The demolition is moving forward without that information. With it comes the potential for releasing more contaminants into the surrounding area, residents say. We do not believe that to be a safe or responsible plan, wrote Tony Montgomery, president of the Pike County Board of Commissioners, in a letter to Gov. Mike DeWine late last year. ....

Dan Gleiter, PennLive HARHAR Facebook Share Nearly 40% of deer ticks tested positive for Lyme disease in the largest countywide study of the parasitic arachnids ever conducted in Pennsylvania. Among 1,000 deer ticks tested, 38.77% were found to be carrying the pathogen, according to a report released Wednesday by Pike County’s Tick Borne Diseases Task Force. They also are known as blacklegged ticks. Batonellosis, which causes a range of diseases in humans, including cat scratch fever, trench fever and Carrion’s disease, was the second most found pathogen, carried by 18.52% of the ticks. ....
Since March is DD Awareness Month, the Pike County Board of DD thought it was a great time to thank the Pike County Health Department for the time and effort they put in to ensure that our individuals received their COVID vaccines. Coordinating their efforts, the Pike County Health Department and the PCBDD SSA (Service and Support Administration) Department were able to contact individuals served by PCBDD, determine those who wished to receive the vaccine, scheduled appointments, and even assisted in arranging transportation for those who needed help in getting to the vaccination site.
