Monk stands firm on plans to continue with Pike River recovery project

A public statement last week, issued by the Pike River Family Reference Group, said families had reluctantly accepted a government decision to close the recovery project.
A number of families said they were blindsided by that.
The Pike River Family Committee, which is separate to the reference group, met last night and say three-quarters of the families want to self-fund a feasibility study into recovering the mine s main ventilation fan.
But the level of support for the study is also in dispute.
Last week s statement by the Pike River Family Reference Group - which is the official group working with the government s mine recovery agency - sparked uproar among some relatives of the 29 dead miners. ....

In November 2010, 29 miners were killed in a series of explosions at Pike River Coal’s underground mine. This was not a random accident, but the outcome of deliberate decisions to place production ahead of workers’ safety. The mine was a death trap, with grossly inadequate methane drainage, monitoring and ventilation systems, and no emergency exit. ....

Families of most of the 29 men who died following a
series of explosions at the Pike River Coal mine in November
2010 are continuing to demand a thorough underground
investigation of the disaster, in opposition to the Labour
Party-Greens government’s attempt to shut it
down.
After more than a decade, no one has been held
responsible for the disaster, despite a royal commission in
2012 finding overwhelming evidence of unsafe and illegal
practices by the company, which put production and profit
ahead of workers’ safety. The police, state regulators,
the courts and successive governments have shielded those
responsible from accountability. ....
