The 'Greek Spitfire' Arrives Home

On Thursday, May 29th, Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc MJ755 arrived home in Greece following a three year restoration stint within the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar at former RAF Biggin Hill near London, England. MJ755 is the only ex-Hellenic Air Force Spitfire extant, and had not flown over Greece since her retirement from military service on December 8th, 1953, so her homecoming garnered significant attention, both domestically and overseas! MJ755 set out from Biggin for Greece on May 25th, making stops in France and Italy on the way. Upon entering Greek airspace last Thursday, two Hellenic Air Force F-16s from 335 Squadron, a unit within which MJ755 once served, gave her an honorary escort. The Spitfire first landed upon Greek soil at the nation's most westerly terrain, the Island of Corfu. She then made her way to Ioannina and from there to Tatoi, just north of Athens. ....

You can t fly a Spitfire and forget about it. it stays with you forever!
Those words were spoken by Geoff Wellum, RAF 92 Squadron as he talked about his days flying Spitfires in the Battle of Britain as part of documentary on the legendary Supermarine Spitfire.
While Geoff was in his late nineties, his eyes shone full of youth has he talked about Spitfires in a tone that can only be described as reverenced excitement. In fact, in all of the narratives I read and videos I watched about pilots that flew the various marques of Spitfire, they all had this inexplicable glint in their eyes when talking about this aircraft. What was it about a Spitfire that brought forth such emotions regarding what was to me just another WW2 aircraft? This notion of a Spitfire being just another WW2 aircraft changed for me in July 2017… ....

As we have reported in the past, the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar and its parent organization, The Spitfire Company (Biggin Hill) Ltd, have made remarkable progress in their work restoring Supermarine Spitfires at their facility on London Biggin Hill Airport, south east of London, England. This site is steeped in Spitfire history, being the former home of what once was RAF Biggin Hill, a major fighter base during the Battle of Britain. The company has worked on a dozen or so Spitfires since their inception, and has several on site at any given time, both airworthy and those under rebuild. Readers might recall the first flight last year of ‘The Greek Spitfire’, Spitfire Mk.IX MJ755, which is the last complete surviving example to have served in the Greek Air Force. ....
