The power sector of Pakistan is being pushed towards a new crisis by an influential lobby that has mobilised the federation to pave way for privatisation of power distribution companies including Lahore Electric Supply Corporation (Lesco), Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco).
The lobby has successfully promoted its own chosen members on the board of directors of distribution companies against the merit. The Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and foreign investors have expressed interest to buy power distribution companies, which have assets worth billions of dollars. ....

FAISALABAD: Five more corona patients died on Sunday while 79 people tested COVID-19 positive during the last two days here.
According to the Health Department spokesperson, the number of deaths had reached 374 since March last year.
He said that 1,548 coronavirus tests were conducted in public and private sector laboratories, adding that active cases in Faisalabad reached 729 while 6,677 patients had so far been recovered.
He said that 550 beds were allocated at the Allied Hospital and 85 at the DHQ Hospital for the COVID-19 patients, adding that 104 patients, including 39 confirmed, were under treatment at the Allied Hospital while 43, including two confirmed, had been admitted to the DHQ Hospital. ....

LAHORE: The last Saturday’s power breakdown that hit the entire country and couldn’t completely be tackled for long two days has once again exposed the fragility of the grid and the system’s inefficiency.
Normally power supply tends to resume in eight to 10 hours after any major power breakdown. However, power failure that struck this time around in night prolonged up to rare 48-hour duration mainly due to imbalance in power supply, thanks to chronic shortfall in primary energy sources.
Such helpless scenario exacerbated the situation as coal-fired and nuclear plants meeting base-load faltered for extended periods due to their peculiar power generation processes. Such inability of the power plants rendered whole power grid dead with no backup generation available as considerable time was needed for the startup of both coal and nuclear power units. ....

FAISALABAD: Regional Police Officer (RPO) Riffat Mukhtar Raja Sunday directed police officers to ensure strict security of Chinese engineers and foreigners working at various projects across the district under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Addressing a meeting, he directed the CPO Faisalabad and DPOs Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Chiniot to make stringent security arrangements by ensuring three-tier security involving policemen, private guards and armed security personnel for Chinese and other foreigners. He said no negligence in this regard would be tolerated at any cost.
