Suspending U.S.-ROK Military Exercises Will Not Facilitate Peace Negotiations
Seoul may have its hopes up, but history shows Pyongyang will not change course if military exercises are altered.
In his new year’s press conference on January 27, Suh Wook, the Republic of Korea’s (ROK) defense minister, provided an ambiguous statement on plans for the combined ROK-U.S. military exercises scheduled for this spring. While he stated the exercises will continue as planned, Minister Suh also hinted that Seoul could reconsider the effort because the “joint military drills are negotiable with North Korea.” His equivocal remarks warrant concern, because a suspension of the exercises would continue undermining the U.S. and ROK’s combined military readiness. Moreover, suspending the exercises would feed directly into the North Korean regime’s political warfare strategy of extorting political, economic, and security concessions from its adversaries while giving up nothing ....

Dec. 29 (UPI) North Korean authorities may have banned the use of foreign currency in informal markets, where ordinary North Koreans generate most of their income, according to a Japanese press report.
Citing South Korean government sources, the Asahi Shimbun reported Tuesday North Korea s ban on currencies like the U.S. dollar and the Chinese yuan apply to the more than 500 marketplaces. North Korean buyers and sellers mostly accept foreign currencies for transactions, according to the report. ....

Dec. 28 (UPI) Kim Jong Un could forgo a New Year Address after a year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced military activity.
Kim, who has made relatively few public appearances in 2020, is expected to make a speech at Pyongyang s Eighth Party Congress in January. A New Year Address could be redundant, or could focus less on policy, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported Monday. ....

Dec. 22 (UPI) An online aviation tracker is reporting an aircraft previously used by Kim Jong Un was seen traveling from Pyongyang to the eastern coast of North Korea.
No Callsign, a South Korea-based tracker, tweeted the movement of the plane, an Antonov An-148, on Tuesday.

The tracker publishes images of real-time aircraft movements. The Air Koryo aircraft, flight JS671, left the North Korean capital at 10:05 a.m. and flew toward an unidentifiable location on the country s eastern coast, according to South Korean news service News 1 and Hankyoreh on Tuesday. ....
