James Keliikupakako, 19, of Makawao was seen hitting the ground with a crowbar in the parking lot of Kings BBQ & Chinese Restaurant at 197 N. Market St. the evening of May 1, according to testimony at his preliminary hearing Wednesday in Wailuku District Court. Employee Dunhao Zhang, testifying through a Mandarin interpreter, said Keliikupakako approached and was about 4 feet away when he said, “I just came out from jail.” ....

Kayla Johnston, 27, agreed to return with her mother to California to attend a treatment program, as part of one year’s probation. Second Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo said Johnston was lucky to have support from her mother, who flew to Maui to help Johnston. “If you need help, E.T. phone home,” Loo said, referring to the science fiction movie. “K.J. phone mom.” ....

Gilbert Natividad, 45, of Kihei was among 10 men arrested in what police called a reverse prostitution operation targeting “johns” or customers. “Looks like you were looking for love in all the wrong places or, rather, looking for sex in all the wrong places,” 2nd Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo said Dec. 11 in sentencing Natividad. He was sentenced after pleading no contest to a reduced charge of prostitution. ....
