City Council's Black Caucus backs civilian police oversight compromise over Lightfoot's objection

The Chicago City Council’s Black Caucus has endorsed a civilian police oversight plan summarily rejected by Mayor Lori Lightfoot, setting the stage for what could be Lightfoot’s first Council defeat.
By a 75% vote, the Black Caucus agreed to join the Council’s Hispanic and Progressive caucuses in endorsing a compromise ordinance crafted by two groups that have long pushed dramatically different versions of civilian police oversight: the Civilian Police Accountability Council and the Grassroots Alliance for Police Accountability.
“We definitely need some level of civilian oversight and accountability in the Police Department in addition to what we have today. This is what our residents have asked for. …This is an ordinance that delivers that. We have to put something on the table that’s comprehensive in nature,” said Ald. Jason Ervin (28th), Black Caucus chairman. ....

Chicago mayor vowed to reform police – but many see little to no progress

First published on Mon 3 May 2021 06.00 EDT
On 20 May 2019, the freshly elected Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot delivered her inauguration speech to a jubilant audience.
It was imbued with promises of fundamental change – tailored care for blighted neighborhoods, solutions to government corruption and endemic violent crime, an ambitious agenda for tackling deep-rooted faults in the city.
“For years they’ve said Chicago ain’t ready for reform. Well, get ready, because reform is here,” Lightfoot, Chicago’s first Black woman and openly gay mayor, and a former federal prosecutor, said.
She pledged to reform the Chicago police department, promising to “continue the hard but essential work of forging partnerships between police officers and the community premised on mutual respect, accountability and a recognition that the destinies of police and community are inextricably intertwined”. ....

Created: April 30, 2021 03:38 PM
Students at the University of Minnesota are demanding changes to policing on campus.
On Friday, organizers from the group Students For a Democratic Society held a rally on U of M President Joan Gabel s home lawn.
We re here and we re going to continue to fight until we get our demands met, said Jalisa Sang, a freshman at the University of Minnesota.
These students are demanding Gabel take action against the U of M Police Department.
The presence of police there just makes me feel unsafe and uneasy, Sang said.
Students have a handful of demands including the creation of a CPAC, or a Civilian Police Accountability Council, which would include students and community members. ....
