Black defense attorney Milton Raiford refused Wednesday to participate in his client’s nonjury trial until Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. meets with him, resigns or recuses himself from all of Raiford’s cases.
A spokesman for Zappala said that the office is aware of Raiford’s comments and has ordered a transcript of the proceedings. ....

Eleven members of Allegheny County’s state House delegation sent a letter to District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. on Friday condemning his policy of refusing to make plea offers to a Black attorney who criticized his office as being “systematically racist.”
The two-page document demands that the policy be rescinded.
“District attorneys are among the most powerful actors in the criminal justice system,” the letter said. “That power can be used to pursue justice or to deny it. Your policy and your actions have put you squarely in the latter category. We demand that you take corrective action immediately.” ....

Abolitionist Law Center settles, withdraws civil suit over access to Allegheny County judge's criminal court proceedings

PITTSBURGH – Litigation from a public interest law organization against a criminal court judge in Allegheny County, which claimed that the judge violated the First Amendment through preventing the plaintiff and members of the public from remotely observing criminal proceedings in his courtroom, has been settled and withdrawn.
Abolitionist Law Center first filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania on March 2 versus Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge Anthony D. Mariani. Both parties are of Pittsburgh.
The plaintiff is a nonprofit law firm which oversees a court-watching program in Pennsylvania’s Fifth Judicial District, which includes Allegheny County. The program’s volunteers observe dozens of criminal hearings each week, in order to monitor the day-to-day operations of the County’s justice system and share those observations with local community members, advocates and ....
