The Seattle metro area added roughly 5,300 total construction jobs over the last 12 months. Just 29% of 358 major metropolitan regions added any such jobs over that period, “while construction employment was stagnant in 51 metro areas,” according to the AGCA. ....

Will the construction industry rebound to pre-pandemic levels?

Mar 08, 2021
The overall U.S. economy is operating at 22 percent below pre-pandemic levels but should rebound by the first half of the year, says Richard Branch, chief economist for
For the construction industry, however, the rebound picture is not as bright, Branch said March 5 during Dodge’s first-quarter outlook.
“Construction is certainly one of those industries that will take time for the recovery to really dig in and take hold and gain traction,” he said.
Total construction starts declined 9% in 2020 and are expected to rise 4% in 2021. His prediction for this year, however, is still about $46 billion shy of the industry’s peak in 2019. ....

Construction firms across Minnesota and the U.S. are bracing for a solemn 2021 as demand wanes and projects are postponed or canceled as clients wrestle with the coronavirus pandemic and its economic fallout.
That is the situation according to survey results released Thursday by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and Sage Construction and Real Estate.
This is clearly going to be a difficult year for the construction industry, said AGC Chief Executive Stephen Sandherr during an online conference call with members Thursday. AGC & SAGE Forecast COVID-19 to Shrink the 2021 Construction Market

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and Sage Construction and Real forecast the COVID-19 pandemic to shrink construction demand, decrease new hires and increase cancelled or delayed production in 2021.
AGC and Sage conducted the 2021 Construction Outlook National Survey, which accumulated 1,329 responses, and discussed the results in a Facebook Live event with a panel of contractors on Thursday. The survey concluded that most companies anticipate declining demand for work in all construction categories excluding water and sewer, warehouse and other healthcare facilities (clinics, testing or screening, or medical labs).
AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson forecasts
the construction industry won’t return to pre-pandemic levels anytime soon. Of the survey participants, 59% of companies had to postpone production and 44% saw project cancellations, resulting in lost income in 2020. ....
