Dean: Education pipeline will grow NM economy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Creating an education pipeline can be a powerful tool for helping the state grow its economy, according to the new head of University of New Mexico’s College of Education and Human Sciences.
During a webinar hosted by the Economic Forum of Albuquerque Wednesday morning, Hansel Burley, who began as dean of UNM’s education and human sciences department last summer, spoke about the school’s role in educating school teachers and administrators and forming collaborations throughout the community.
Burley said creating a pipeline of talented and caring teachers, counselors and other school staffers can not only improve New Mexico’s perennially low rankings in K-12 education, but also act as an economic development tool for the state. ....

New Mexico Chamber Of Commerce And 21 Other State Business Groups Take Aim At Legislative Priorities

The New Mexico Chamber of Commerce and 21 other state business groups including the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce are asking the Legislature to refocus the 60-day session on promoting long-term economic recovery and competitiveness.
The group made the request via an advertisement that ran in nine of the state’s largest papers, including the Wednesday issue of The New Mexican, and drew the ire of House Speaker Brian Egolf, who defended the Democratic-controlled Legislature’s work on economic issues.
New Mexico Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Rob Black said the Legislature should be focusing on legislation that improves New Mexico’s economic diversity and safeguard businesses as they reopen in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which he says will help the state promote a more friendly economic climate and catch up to neighbori ....

“We want to determine how competitive we really are,” Casey said.
Casey, who worked most recently for the Greater Sacramento Economic Council, said Albuquerque saw a 24% decline in information-sector jobs in the previous five years, and has lagged behind cities like Phoenix in job growth in professional, scientific and technical services. Casey said Albuquerque improved its job total in that industry by 23% in the past two decades, while Phoenix increased by 52% over the same period.
“These are things we’re going to be thinking about in our strategy,” she said.
Still, Casey said Albuquerque has plenty of momentum with new arrivals to the city. She pointed to a 2019 study from United Van Lines, which noted that more people moved to the city than away from it that year. With more businesses and employees looking at remote-work opportunities, Casey said the city has a chance to capitalize on interest from crowded Western cities, including Denver, Los Angeles and ....
