New Responsible Mining Index highlights gaps in industry transparency and execution of policies
Many mining companies are not actually implementing their own policies concerning key commitments towards human rights and health and safety, according to a new assessment from the Responsible Mining Index (RMI) 2018.
The Responsible Mining Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in the Netherlands, released its first RMI report in April 2018. The report aims to reflect the Foundationâs support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, evaluating companies that produce 25% of all mined commodities globally on economic, environmental, social, and governance (EESG) issues.
The report says companies do not always reinforce their policies around EESG issues with âsystematic, effective company-wide action,â revealing that there was little to no action taken where âcompanies would be expected to act.â Especially around human rights, there were minimal e ....

Most miners lag behind in human rights issues report

Ten years after the adoption of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), a new study says that most large mining companies have failed to translate promises to communities into action plans.
According to the latest report by the Responsible Mining Foundation, top mining companies identify human rights-relates issues as a “material” subject that is included in their public reporting. Most of them, however, need to step up efforts to improve their human rights record.

Anglo American global network meeting commits to continued dialogue

10 December, 2020The IndustriALL Global Union Anglo American global network agreed to continue engaging with the multinational mining company on a framework for global dialogue to deal with critical issues and challenges affecting mineworkers at its global operations.
The meeting on 3-4 December was a follow up on progress made so far towards the proposed dialogue between Anglo American and IndustriALL, as discussed at the last network meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2019. The meeting discussed sustainable mining and acknowledged the global network’s potential to build union power in the mining sector.

The IndustriALL mining and DGOJP sector co-chairperson, Lucineide Varjao Soares, said that in some instances mining companies were unwilling to negotiate and resolve workers grievances. She cited the strike at Cerrejon mine in Colombia, owned by Anglo American, BHP and Glencore as an example of the refusal to negotiate with unions. ....
