Housing study forum highlights housing needs in Manhattan, northeast Kansas
Members of the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation continue a series of community engagement sessions to gather input on the state of housing in Kansas.
Nearly two dozen residents and stakeholders participated virtually Tuesday from across northeast Kansas, including Manhattan. Individuals were paired divided into two breakout sessions to share input. Executive Assistant Abigail Phillips says her group discussed rural housing incentive districts, code enforcement and the fact that so many homes are dilapidated.
“One of the big challenges facing smaller communities is they can’t afford to have people focus solely on code enforcement, because there just isn’t enough work in the smaller communities to keep people busy. Some of the folks in our group suggested having regional inspectors that can cover larger areas,” she said. ....

Developing individual plans and studies to give students the chance to acquire the skills to investigate the careers and employ strategies to attune to their future career goals, the Pottawatomie County Economic Development Corporation has recognized the efforts of counselors in Wamego High School and elsewhere in the community to network, mentor, job shadow, and coordinate internships that 50 out of the 95 in the senior class participated in.
Executive Director Jack Allston highlights that developing that individual plan of study is the real key, as students take the Work Keys test in February of their junior year, and then wrap their plan of study into the internships that they’re going to have. ....

About five Pottawatomie County residents were hospitalized with COVID-19 complications as of Monday’s report.
However, Leslie Campbell, Pottawatomie County health director, told the Pott. County Commission on Monday that area hospitals are taking in out-of-county patients as well.
The Onaga Community Healthcare System has people from Jackson, Nemaha (and) Marshall (County) all in the hospital,” Campbell said. “So there’s more people in the hospital, they’re just not all from Pottawatomie County.”
She says the county’s numbers may also not be indicative of how many COVID-19-positive Pottawatomie County residents are actually in Pottawatomie County hospitals. ....
