A decade of civil war in Syria - 60 Minutes


The decades-long Syrian conflict began in 2011 as part of the larger Arab Spring movement that rippled across the Middle East and North Africa. Syrians took to the streets in January 2011 to protest the iron-fisted rule of the Bashar al-Assad regime, demand the release of political prisoners and call for democratic reform. What started as minor demonstrations transformed into large-scale uprisings in March of that year, after security forces opened fire and killed protestors in the southern city of Deraa. But instead of succeeding in its apparent attempts at silencing and suppressing, the Assad regime s violent response triggered national unrest, plunging the country into a civil war that has yet to be resolved. Since 2011, over 400,000 Syrians have been killed, more than five million have become refugees, six million are internally displaced, and almost 12 million are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, according to the World Bank and United Nations.  ....

Major-General (retired) Henry Anyidoho served as the Deputy Force commander and Chief of Staff for UNAMIR in Rwanda. He has also served in international peacekeeping operations in Lebanon, Liberia and Cambodia. Following his time in Rwanda, he was posted to the Ministry of Defense in Ghana. He served as the Chairman of the Ghana Telecom Board of Directors and is the author of the book, Guns over Kigali (1997).
Michael Barnett served as the political officer at the US Mission to the United Nations assigned to cover Rwanda in 1994. His 2003 book, Eyewitness to a Genocide: the United Nations and Rwanda, draws on his experiences from this period. Barnett is currently a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a University Professor of International Affairs and Political Science at The George Washington’s Elliott School of International Affairs in Washington, DC. ....

'Caesar Sanctions' Are Killing Syrians: They Must Be Overturned

James Jeffrey, Obama’s U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and Trump’s Special Representative for Syrian Engagement, said the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists are a U.S. asset, and any government helping to rebuild Assad’s Syria will be a target of the Caesar Sanctions.
The real intent of the “Caesar Sanctions” was stated by James Jeffrey, who served as the Special Representative for Syrian Engagement in the Trump administration.
