Health officials seeing higher COVID-19 case numbers across Tri-County

HENDERSON — COVID-19 case rates in the Tri-County are once again on the rise, the Granville-Vance Health Department officials said this week in their latest bulletin about the virus’ effects on the area.
As of July 28, there had been 102 new cases in Granville County and 52 in Vance County, with 41 and 21 of those, respectively, emerging in the past week, Granville-Vance Health Director Lisa Harrison said in the report.
Harrison called that a “concerning resurgence” of infections, one that shows people should not “underestimate COVID-19 and its ability to remain a threat to health and life.”
But there have been no additional deaths in the two counties in the past month, and vaccination rates are improving, she said. ....

CDC report highlights rural-urban split in vaccine uptake

HENDERSON — Like their counterparts in much of the country, rural counties in North Carolina were slower than urban ones in the winter and spring to get COVID-19 vaccinations into the arms of their residents, a new report published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control says.
That trend was and remains evident in the Tri-County, where 39.0% of residents in Vance County, 40.8% in Granville County and 41.8% in Warren County had received first-dose vaccinations as of Tuesday.
In the urban communities just to the region’s south, first-dose shots have reached 53.1% of residents in Wake County, 52.1% in Durham County and a state-leading 60.7% of residents in Orange County. ....

Settlement requires state prisons to test for Hepatitis C and treat every patient

The ACLU of North Carolina has settled a lawsuit with the N.C. Department of Public Safety to improve the testing and treatment of Hepatitis C in state prisons. A federal judge approved the settlement Monday.
Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by a virus. It is transmissible through blood contact or sharing items including syringes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the deadliest infectious disease in the United States prior to the COVID pandemic.
The ACLU filed the lawsuit on behalf of three incarcerated people in 2018. Back then, the Department of Safety only treated patients whose symptoms have progressed to severe liver scarring and fibrosis, the initial complaint stated. ....

State agrees to expand early prison releases

WARRENTON — A settlement agreement between North Carolina’s government and civil-rights groups is expected to lead to some sort of early release for 3,500 state-prison inmates in hopes of getting them out of the immediate line of fire of COVID-19.
The deal prospectively resolves a lawsuit against the state the State Conference of the NAACP and other groups had lodged on behalf of prisoners, a case that a judge had already warned both sides the state was likely to lose.
The state has 180 days to complete the process once Wake County Superior Judge Vince Rozier, who’s overseeing the case, acts on a request from the two sides to delay further court action. ....
