While others might have used the enforced isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic to learn how to bake sourdough bread or play the ukulele, the staff and volunteers for United Way of Central Florida developed new ways of finding support and helping local residents amid a global health crisis.
“I’m just so proud of our staff and our partners because while other people may have picked up a hobby or picked up a new skill during this COVID time, they really were working overtime to make sure that we could serve as many clients as possible,” said Christina Criser Jackson, president and CEO of United Way of Central Florida. “And this was a record year for that, the number of clients served and the number of volunteers.”
Both men were being held without bond Friday in the Polk County Jail.
The investigation began when deputies responded to a call of a disturbance at 1205 Cherry Lane. They determined that Rey Sanchez had threatened to kill Rafael Sanchez and his family, PCSO reported.
The two men’s relationship was redacted in the arrest report, but it said they had previously lived together as family members and Rey Sanchez resided in a large shed on the property.
The arrest report provided this narrative: After being threatened, Rafael Sanchez fled in a vehicle and Rey Sanchez followed him to a gas station before returning home. Rafael then called police for help. Rey Sanchez, meanwhile, called the man and said, “If I can’t kill you, I’m going to kill your chickens.”
The operation began Jan. 14, when federal agents intercepted a shipment of generic Xanax in New York, Judd said. The Department of Homeland Security Investigations coordinated with its Tampa office to arrange undercover purchases of other drugs, and the agency asked the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for help, said Kevin Sibley, special agent in charge for the Tampa office.
Federal agents seized a parcel containing about 2,500 generic Xanax pills, PCSO said. Three days after Sibley contacted Judd s office, undercover operations were set up in Polk County.
Undercover agents arranged a controlled delivery of the pills to Amber Cayson, 37, at 3237 Xerxes Ave. in Winter Haven, the PCSO said. When deputies arrested Cayson, they found 2.4 pounds of marijuana, 24 pounds of edible THC-infused products and one pound of methamphetamine, the release said.
