Jim and Carol Spencer’s memories of riding the train as youngsters was just one of the inspirations for setting up a miniature railroad in their San Diego Country Estates backyard.
While growing up in Chicago, Carol often traveled by train with her sister to visit their grandfather in Topeka, Kan. Long before he met his future wife, Jim also made trips to visit his grandparents in Topeka.

Gov. Newsom wants schools, to reopen fully by fall; will they?

Gov. Newsom wants schools, to reopen fully by fall; will they?
April 9, 2021
Gov. Gavin Newsom said this week that school districts and the state’s 2- and 4-year colleges and universities should reopen to full in-person instruction after June 15. The California Department of Public Health announced the state would end the color-coded tier system that restricted business and school openings based on infection rates. The combined announcements would be a big step toward normalcy.
We explore the impact of Newsom’s pronouncement on the fall for K-12  and the state’s 115 community colleges. A key positive takeaway said the chief lobbyist for the organization representing school administrations, is that hybrid instruction won’t be necessary, and districts should plan with that in mind. Community colleges welcome the message but some will phase in reopening cautiously, with an eye on vaccination numbers and Covid trends this summer, said the president of a San Diego area college and the chancellor of the community college system. Both said they expect to reverse the steep decline in enrollment over the past year.

Six organizations earn SDG&E energy awards

San Diego Gas & Electric’s Energy Showcase program recently recognized six entities in the San Diego region for their leadership in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. For the 15th consecutive year, the program honored local organizations that made exceptional efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and increase conservation of resources.
“These winners set a great example for others to follow. They’ve demonstrated that investing in clean and innovative technologies not only help the environment but also benefit the bottom line,” said Tashonda Taylor, vice president of customer operations for SDG&E, in a statement. “Ultimately, their efforts help our region move closer to meeting California’s ambitious climate goals and in turn, create a sustainable future.”

Year in Review: November's election drew record voter turnout

Print
This year’s presidential election cycle drew the highest voter turnout despite a pandemic that had the county’s Registrar of Voters adapting to social distancing and a dramatic increase in mail-in ballots.
To make voting possible for all registered voters who wanted to cast a ballot this fall, state officials decided every registered voter would receive an absentee ballot that could be mailed back for free or returned at numerous locations before Election Day. Drop-off spots included local libraries in the weeks leading up to Nov. 3. There was also four days of on-site voting at many community venues.
