'Nigeria has only 90 cancer specialists'


He said: “For a population of 201 million, Nigeria has less than 90 clinical oncologists who provide cancer treatment to over 100,000 cancer patients across the cancer centres.
“In our calculation, it means that there is only one cancer doctor to over 1,100 cancer patients in Nigeria.”
While lamenting the mass migration of healthcare workers from Nigeria to foreign countries in recent years, Chidebe said the situation had worsened the inequitable distribution of health care workers in the country.
“As of today, 9 in 10 Nigerian physicians are seeking opportunities abroad.
“In Nigeria, there are 74,543 registered physicians, however, only an estimated 40,000 are practising in the country for a population of 201 million,” he lamented. ....

Dr. Matthew Obinna Nwaneri is an Associate Professor at Carver College of Medicine and Medical Director, Iowa Oncology Network, medical oncologist at the University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC)
Born in Ibadan, Oyo State, brought up in Lagos State and in his hometown, Umuezeala-Ehime, Ehime, in Ehime-Mbano local council of Imo State, where he lived with his grandparents after his secondary education, Dr. Matthew Obinna Nwaneri is not bashful of change.

WITH the exception of a few Nigerians, including fellow crew members familiar with his health status, most of the Nigerians and non-Nigerians who have watched the 2020 blockbuster Nollywood movie, Citation, would not have realised what pain the veteran actor, Sadiq Abubakar Daba, underwent while featuring in the movie. According to movie producer, Kunle Afolayan, Daba actually had an oxygen machine close by as he played his alloted role in the movie, understandably a cameo appearance. Daba’s passion for theatre and the arts was exemplary. Although he had been away from the limelight for years, Daba did not fail to deliver when he was called upon to feature in the 2014 Nollywood blockbuster, October 1. He  in fact won the 2015 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Inspector Waziri in the movie. ....

This was how it used to be like back then: Nigerian Television Authority’s estimated 30 million viewers would hear Bongos Ikwue’s sonorous voice and know that it was time for Cockcrow at Dawn. That voice, which was accompanied by the strum of his guitar, had the effect of a pheromone on families across Nigeria, keeping them glued to their television sets.
Cockcrow at Dawn – which shared the same title as its music – used to feature many colourful characters, among whom was Bitrus. And the character Bitrus – played by Abubakar Sadiq Daba who died on Wednesday, March 3 – had remained evergreen in the television audience’s memory. ....
