The departure and settlement ends a failed episode on the effort to improve Providence Public Schools
Peters earned $225,000 a year and signed a three-year contract in January of 2020. And, by contract the state made an additional 15% annual contribution to Peters state retirement account it computes to another $33,750 per year. 
The settlement provides for mutual indemnification, the lumpsum payment from the State of Rhode Island to Peters includes salary, auto payments and retirement payments.
The contract provided other financial incentives. Peters was just about 15 months through the 36-month agreement.

Students at Classical High School in Providence began a two-day walkout on Thursday, calling for the removal of school resource officers from all public schools in the city.
Students and advocates want city and school officials to reallocate money for police officers to mental health and support services instead.
At the end of 2020, at least six SROs were reported to be working consistently across the district, but the students say police officers in schools contribute to discrimination and criminalization of normal misconduct in schools, rather than improve overall safety. ....

Providence School Dept. provides update on Turnaround Action Plan


The districts says they have done the following:
Significantly improved the customer service experience for families
Created exciting new programs for student
Expanded professional development opportunities for educators
Restructured so that PPSD staff can best meet student needs.
Back in June of 2020, the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) released the Turnaround Action Plan (TAP) for Providence Public Schools.
The plan came one year after the tragic report by Johns Hopkins Institute on the school district to the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education.
The report is what led to the state’s control of the district in November of 2019. ....

The report by the Center for Youth and Community Leadership in Education (CYCLE) at Roger Williams University found that 8 percent of arrests were of students at Roger Williams Middle School in Providence.Ryan Conaty/The Boston Globe
PROVIDENCE – Black students accounted for 30 percent of all arrests in Providence schools between the 2016-17 school year and the 2019-20 school year, even though they made up just 16 percent of the student population, according to a report released Wednesday by the Center for Youth and Community Leadership in Education (CYCLE) at Roger Williams University. ....
