Prince George Free Press » Calling all Elders

A pair of meetings next week will give local Elders some ideas on how to make things better for the local Aboriginal population.
The first meeting, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the Prince George Civic Centre, is open to everyone in the community. A press release from the Urban Aboriginal Elders spells out the purpose.
“The Elders want to hear from you about your needs and how they can assist. They want to share with you about how together we can make a difference for everyone in the Prince George community.”
After the first open meeting, a second meeting on Feb. 19, also at the Civic Centre and running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be for Elders, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. Laura Blumhagen, network co-ordinator for the Aboriginal Business Development Centre, which is sponsoring the event, says defining an Elder is difficult. ....

Prince George Free Press » Assembly member encouraging participation

Even if you don’t spend your Sundays watching the political talks shows, you have something to offer a public hearing next week on the province’s electoral system, says a Prince George member of the group examining it.
“People should come out and take part, and be informed,” said Mary Jarbek, one of 160 members of the Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform charged with recommending any changes to the way British Columbians elect their government.
Jarbek will be one of the members hosting a public hearing May 10, one of 49 across the province in the next two months to gather input from citizens. ....

Prince George Free Press » Individualism in context

Special to the Free Press
In this icy economic climate, one often hears the cold advice, “You have only yourself to blame.” The words echo down dark, trash-bestrewn lanes. The clock tower in the distance doesn’t yet strike thirteen, but one wonders what’s next.
In early 1982 the solicitor-general department of Alberta ran billboard ads depicting a tow truck pulling a wrecked car out a snow-filled ditch. In the lower portion of the sign in large letters was the comment: “Don’t blame the weather. Blame yourself!” The strategy of encouraging more self-blame among often already discouraged and depressed people seemed dubious at best. ....
