PATIALA: Three prisoners, including an inmate deported from the UK, escaped from the central jail here, officials said on Wednesday.
The trio escaped Tuesday night after making a hole in the wall of the prison cell, they said.

One of the escapees, Sher Singh, was deported from the United Kingdom and was undergoing a 22-year sentence.
He was brought to the Patiala jail from the Bathinda prison early this month, they said.
The other two are Inderjit Singh, resident of Kapurthala; and Jaspreet Singh, hailing from Rupnagar, they said. ....

A manhunt is under way in Pietermaritzburg, where 31 prisoners escaped on the way to court on Wednesday morning.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Brig Jay Naicker said five gunmen in a double-cab bakkie blocked two police officers who had been transporting the prisoners from the New Prison to the Pietermaritzburg magistrate s court.
“The suspects pointed firearms at the police officers and forced open the rear of the truck. Thirty-one awaiting-trial prisoners escaped out of the 45 that were in the truck,” he said. ....

LAHORE: A summary of the 30-day pardon for prisoners on the occasion of Eid has been sent to the federal cabinet. A summary sent to the federal cabinet by the interior ministry has requested a 30-day pardon for the prisoners on the occasion of Eidul Fitr. The summary will be sent to the president after the approval of the federal cabinet. According to the interior ministry, the concession will not be available for inmates of serious cases, including terrorism and murder.
The interior ministry said 60-year-old women jailed for minor offences will be eligible for the waiver, but those convicted in corruption cases will not get this favour. ....

Asean changed Myanmar statement on release of political detainees, say sources

JAKARTA, April 256 (Reuters): A draft statement circulating the day before a South-East Asian leaders summit on the Myanmar crisis included the release of political prisoners as one of its consensus points, said three sources familiar with the document. But in the final statement at the end of Saturday s meeting, the language on freeing political prisoners had been unexpectedly watered down and did not contain a firm call for their release, two of the sources said. The absence of a strong position on this issue caused dismay among human rights activists and opponents of the coup, fuelling criticism by them that the meeting had achieved little in the way of reining in the country s military leaders. Activist monitors say 3,389 people have been detained in a crackdown on dissent by the military since the Feb. 1 coup, and nearly 750 people have been killed. The five-point consensus in the chairman s statement at the end of the Association of South-East Asian ....
