Biden's decision on Afghanistan raises Guantanamo questions

US President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan is raising questions about what, if any, effect that will have on the future of the Guantanamo Bay detention center.
According to The Hill, at least two prisoners who have been challenging their detention have already updated their complaints to include Biden’s withdrawal as a reason they should be released.
But according to some experts while the war on terrorism will continue even after the last U.S. service member leaves Afghanistan, the legal justification for indefinite detention at Guantanamo does not appear to be going anywhere anytime soon, The Hill reported. ....

Prisoner releases customary during major holidays; this is second time the junta has pardoned prisoners after the latest coup
Myanmar s junta on Saturday announced it pardoned and released more than 23,000 prisoners to mark the new year holiday, but it wasn t immediately clear if they included pro-democracy activists who were detained in the wake of the February coup.
The release was announced on state broadcaster MRTV, which said that the military leader Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing pardoned the 23,047 prisoners, including 137 foreigners who will be deported from Myanmar. He also reduced sentences for others. ....

Two cops killed, 23 prisoners injured in Layyah van crash

Two police officers lost their lives and 23 people were injured after a police van transporting prisoners met with an accident in Layyah, rescue officials said Saturday.
The injured included 23 prisoners and five policemen. Three of the injured cops are said to be in critical condition. Rescue officials confirmed that they have been referred to Nishtar Hospital in Multan.
The crash happened near Azam Bypass when prisoners were being transferred from Muzaffargarh to Layyah, rescue officials said.
The deceased cops were identified as constables Subhan and Qaiser. The injured prisoners and policemen have been shifted to district headquarters and tehsil hospitals. ....
