The Zimbabwean government has declared an amnesty for prisoners who have served at least a third of their sentences.
Addressing journalists during a post-cabinet press briefing on Tuesday evening, information and broadcasting services minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the amnesty would decongest overcrowded prisons.
“The proposed amnesty is targeted at all prisoners who have served at least one third of their sentences, save for those convicted of specified offences such as the following: murder, treason, rape or any sexual offence, carjacking, robbery, stock theft, and public violence. ....

Virginia Governor Signs Executive Order to Allow 69,000 Released Prisoners to Vote
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam signed an executive order on Tuesday to allow released prisoners to vote in a move he claimed will restore their civil rights.
“Going forward, any Virginian released from incarceration will qualify to have their rights restored, even if they remain on community supervision,” a press release from Northam reads.
According to the governor’s office, the change builds on several bipartisan reforms that have been made to the restoration of rights over the last decade, including streamlining the process of having rights restored and eliminating the prerequisite that court costs be paid. ....

Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], March 16 (ANI): Rajasthan s Jaipur prison has opened a petrol pump that is being operated by jail inmates.
The Director-General of prison Rajeev Dasot said, Over 100 prisoners are working at fuel pumps built on jail premises at six locations across the state.
This initiative is providing an opportunity for prisoners to earn money. The revenue generated through the petrol pump will also be used for infrastructure development of prison, he added.
Prisoners working here are trained and receive Rs 249 per day salary that gets transferred to their bank accounts. At Jaipur pump, we registered a sale of Rs 1 crore last month and our target is Rs 3 crore per month, he further said. ....
