Ranitha Gnanarajah, a Sri Lankan lawyer and civil activist, has been included in this year s list of 14 International Courageous Women award presented annually by the US State Department.
On Monday, March 8, at 10:00 a.m., Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will host the annual International Women of Courage (IWOC) Awards virtual ceremony to honor a group of extraordinary women from around the world, including an honorary award for seven women leaders and activists from Afghanistan who were assassinated for their dedication to improving the lives of Afghans.

As interim bails issued during Covid-19 expire, Delhi High Court asks undertrial prisoners to surrender

Court ‘not inclined’ to extend the bail term of 3,499 undertrial prisoners.
The Delhi High Court has directed 3,499 undertrial prisoners, who were granted interim bails to de-congest jails here amid the COVID-19 pandemic, to surrender on expiry of their period.
The decision of the court was based on the recommendation of the high powered committee (HPC) constituted on the direction of the Supreme Court to decongest jails to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
A Bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Talwant Singh said it was not inclined to further extend the period of interim bail granted to these undertrial prisoners (UTP) under various criteria laid down by the HPC in its several meetings. ....

The Ministry of Justice recently announced its plans to relax its Rule on holding parole hearings in private. The change will end a decades-long ban on public hearings when introduced later this year, as we increasingly shine the light of transparency on a system that was previously secret.
In its statement, the Government makes clear that it is anticipated the vast majority of hearings will continue to be held in private due to the extensive legal, ethical and victims’ issues involved in parole cases. However, the Board absolutely welcomes any steps to improve openness and transparency around the system and can see a measured, considered and staged route to making certain hearings open, if it is in the interests of justice. ....

LAHORE:The Lahore High Court on Tuesday directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to submit a detailed report on the efforts made to provide consular assistance to Pakistanis imprisoned in Iran in order to secure their repatriation.
Earlier, representing a public interest petition, Barrister Sarah Belal said the state was responsible to represent the imprisoned citizens forcefully as required by law to expedite their repatriation and ensure consular assistance at all stages of their imprisonment. She said the efforts of the ministry’s Iran Desk and holding consistent meetings with their counterparts in Tehran to bring back prisoners were laudable but a consular policy was still pending. ....
