New Program Provides Way For Beachgoers to Remove Trash From Shoreline

Here is a frightening fact: Beach trash that travels into the ocean kills more than one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles each year through ingestion and entanglement, according to Relic, a Long island apparel company that sells sustainable clothing and has a mission to help preserve the environment.

One project that Relic helps to promote is the installation of Beach Clean-Up Stations across the shorelines of Long Island. The program provides beachgoers with a station with baskets to pick up trash and deposit it into a conveniently located trash receptacle. The baskets provided are similar to the ones you find in food stores used for grocery shopping. ....

Palumbo continues tradition started by predecessor to host environmental roundtable

Keeping a long-running tradition alive, new state Sen. Anthony Palumbo is continuing his predecessor’s practice of conducting regular environmental roundtables.
On Friday, Mr. Palumbo assembled representatives from more than a dozen area environmental organizations on Zoom to hear their concerns and priorities. He began the virtual meeting by thanking recently retired state Sen. Kenneth LaValle, who served in the Legislature for 44 years. Mr. Palumbo won that seat in November after serving in the Assembly.
At the start of the virtual meeting, Mr. LaValle, who conducted similar roundtables for years, said, “Some of the most beautiful areas in this state and maybe the world are on the East End. I am glad to see Sen. Palumbo continuing this practice.” ....

Grant Awarded For Long Island Sound Education Program to Brookhaven Town

As most people living on Long Island will probably agree, our coastline is one of our most precious resources. Living on Long Island means that you are never very far away from the water, whether it s a bay, ocean, estuary, or the Long island Sound. Stewardship of our coastline will preserve Long Island’s diverse ecology and beautiful environs for future generations. Education is a key part of that effort.

Recently, Brookhaven Town received a 2020 Long Island Sound Futures Fund matching grant to fund the Town’s Coastal Environment and Community Resilience Education Program.

The Fund is managed by The Long Island Sound Study, a partnership whose mission is to restore and protect the Long island Sound. The organization seeks to fund activities that demonstrate a real, on-the-ground commitment to securing a healthy future for the Long Island Sound.
