Brewster, Chatham police searching for man wanted for assault and battery


CHATHAM Police are on the lookout for a man charged in connection with an incident in Chatham last weekend.
The Chatham Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Darren Devine, 30, on charges that include assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, the department said in a statement.
Devine, whom police said frequents wooded areas and paths, was last seen in the area of Millstone Road in Brewster, but also has been observed walking in the Hawksnest area in Harwich, according to the statement.
The Brewster Police Department said in a statement there was an increased police presence in town Tuesday in search of Devine. ....

Denver, Colo., Jun 7, 2019 / 04:00 pm (CNA).- When the Netflix series ‘13 Reasons Why’, which features teen suicide, first aired in 2017, mental health professionals expressed concerns that the show could have a contagion effect, triggering an increase in suicides among teens inspired by the show.
A new study suggests these fears were not unfounded. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, United States youth ages 10-17 had a 28.9% increase in suicide rates in young males in the month (April 2017) following the debut of the show.
“The number of deaths by suicide recorded in April 2017 was greater than the number seen in any single month during the five-year period examined by the researchers,” the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reported. Increases in suicide rates among youth were also found in the month leading up to the shows release, and through December 2017, nine months after its rele ....

BREWSTER – Sgt. Ben Truman has been the Fairless High School resource officer since 2007 when the position was part time.
Truman, a 1984 Fairless graduate, said the gig wasn t his dream scenario when he accepted the assignment. However, he s grown into the job and recognizes its importance.
It wasn t my speed at first, but it s become more comfortable now, the sergeant said Thursday morning from the high school grounds.
Truman s position is funded by an existing Brewster income tax levy that s up for continuation next month. Voters will decide on May 4.
As people see the dim side of police (this week with the Derek Chauvin verdict and shooting death of a teenager that involved a Columbus officer), these kids see (in-person) what we re about, added Truman, who began working at the Brewster Police Department in 1991. ....

Charcoal smoker causes fire at Brewster property


BREWSTER A large charcoal smoker caused a fire at a home on Tubman Road early Monday morning.
The Brewster Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1:35 a.m. Monday on 101 Tubman Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found a smoldering, 12-by-12 foot section of a wooden deck attached to the back of a house, the department said in a statement.
The homeowner and members of the Brewster Police Department had partially extinguished the fire before the firefighters arrival.
The deck and the smoker were wetted down. Fire Chief Robert Moran and Deputy Chief Kevin Varley also responded to the scene, and several off-duty Brewster firefighters returned to headquarters to cover additional responses.  ....

A new pilot program makes Mashpee police the first department on the Cape to use body cameras


For the past two and a half years, Officer Daniel Girard would get ready for his 16-hour shift by putting on his uniform, protective vest and badge. He s also donned a new tool over the past few weeks that could help increase the department’s transparency and allow for further evidence a body camera. 
The Mashpee Police Department implemented its body camera pilot program on Dec. 1. Officers who volunteered will wear body cameras during their shifts. After one year, the department will review the pilot program and decide whether to make body cameras permanent for all officers. 
Mashpee is the first police department on the Cape to implement the use of body cameras.  ....
