Frazer Represents Demons on All-SEC Wrestling

The All-Conference wrestling teams were released by the Southeast Conference for the 2020-21 campaign and one Washington grappler was honored.
Ayden Frazer was the lone representative for the Demons being named to the first team for his weight class of 182 pounds. The senior qualified for his first state appearance last month and won a match at Wells Fargo Arena.  Despite missing over a month this season, Frazer finished with a 21-9 record and racked up 86 wins throughout his high school career. Demon Head Coach Brent Van Weelden tells KCII Sports Frazer has been a staple for this program for years. “He has been around a long time. A lot of youth tournament photos from years past have Ayden in them. He has grown up a lot, got stronger, and matured a lot mentally. He has been a mainstay and wants to continue to play this tough sport in college.” ....

Demon Grapplers to Celebrate Senior Night with Quad

One senior will be honored by the Washington wrestling team this evening when the Demons host their final home meet with senior night.
Ayden Frazer will hit the home mat for the final time in his career at 182 lbs. The senior recently came back from injury and placed second at last week’s Louisa-Muscatine Invitational. Head Coach Brent Van Weelden tells KCII Sports Frazer has been a staple in the program for a long time. “It is great to have him back in the lineup because he has been around for many years. I have seen a lot of pictures pop up on Facebook memories of Washington teams from years past and Ayden is in them as just a little kid. He has been in the program long before high school and has won a lot of matches in his career. He will be challenged tonight, but if Ayden wrestles like he can he could have a special senior night.” ....

Washington Schools Opening Household Spectator Policy to Grandparents

The Washington School Board approved a modification of their spectator policy Wednesday evening.
The district announced last Friday that they would continue allotting two tickets per event participant following Governor Kim Reynolds’ proclamation lifting spectator restrictions, though the two tickets would allow a participants’ entire household to attend if they arrived together. Superintendent Willie Stone says the board decided Wednesday night to also include grandparents with participants’ households, effective Thursday. Stone explains that if a household has more than one participant, each participant is still allowed two tickets, “Now as far as if a family has two students in the same household, yes, they get four tickets. Their household will still enter on two tickets, and then the other two tickets, we can’t really figure out a way around it. The other two tickets they can give to someone else if they want and they’ll be used as single tickets only.” ....

Washington Schools Update on Spectator Policies

While Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new proclamation lifting spectator restrictions at sporting events Thursday, the Washington School District still has measures in place to promote social distancing at events.
Governor Reynolds’ proclamation continues that face masks be required when people are in an indoor public space and are unable to social distance for 15 minutes or longer. Washington Activities Director Brent Van Weelden affirms that face masks are still required for spectators, and until further notice each game or event participant will still be given two tickets. Van Weelden says those two tickets will allow an entire household of those who live with the participant into the event, “That could go a variety of ways, you might have grandpa and grandma living with you, you might have an aunt and uncle living with you, if they’re living in your household they get in on those two tickets.” ....

Washington Wrestling Back at Home Tonight

The Washington wrestling team is back at it tonight for a home quadrangular with a few Southeast Conference teams participating.
The Demons will welcome conference schools Keokuk and Fairfield to town as well as Ottumwa to make up the four teams. Washington had a handful of grapplers compete in Mid-Prairie on Monday for a junior varsity meet. Jacob Hill was a headliner winning all three of his matches in the 177-182 pound weight class. Jacob Miller at 143-149 lbs and Chase Greiner at 160-168 lbs each tallied a pair of contested match wins.
Head Coach Brent Van Weelden tells KCII Sports what he wants to see from his team this week to close out the first half of the season. “We are revisiting some things that are important early on in the year. Pretty basic stuff like staying in a good stance, tweaking some things on shot defense, and working on transitioning. A really good wrestler can transition from one move to another and that is something that we are focusing on now ....
