Solving aflatoxin problem in Africa requires a holistic approach
In Africa, contamination of food and feed with aflatoxin, a natural toxin, is a major problem. Much has already been mapped out on this subject, but possible solutions often focus on one facet or region and are therefore not always effective or useful in other regions.
This is evident from a literature study by Wageningen University & Research that was commissioned by the Partnership for Aflatoxin Prevention in Africa (PACA). The researchers propose a holistic approach to the aflatoxin problem, in which all aspects must be brought together.

Manure is a valuable nutrient source, but if poorly managed, it can also be a wellspring of bacterial contamination for crops.
Lindsay Gilmour, Kimberly Raikes and Rodette Jones discussed contamination pathways and prevention methods during a Feb. 23 webinar presented by Future Harvest CASA.
Farmers need to recognize potentially hazardous situations, assess the situation and find methods to eliminate the risks of contamination, said Jones, who manages the Filbert Street Community Garden in Baltimore.
The closer a food product grows to the ground, the more vulnerable it is to contamination, Gilmour said. Leafy greens and squash, for example, would be in the manure splash zone. ....

New York, 9 March 2021 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced the establishment of a new facility designed to strengthen women’s leadership and participation in crisis contexts.
The Gender and Crisis Engagement Facility, launched on International Women’s Day, will support country, regional and global teams to drive forward transformational change in crisis contexts. Through targeted initiatives, UNDP will demonstrate new ways of working that better respond to the diverse needs of women and girls, and directly challenge harmful gender norms that drive both inequalities and crises.
The Facility’s approach will be based on a nuanced understanding of the gendered effects of crisis, taking to heart the lessons of COVID-19, which has shown that the groups most vulnerable to the impacts of crises are those that faced structural marginalization before the shock. ....

Oregon bill requires free feminine products in schools
Tampons and pads would be available in school bathroom dispensers under proposed legislation
East Multnomah County freshman legislator Ricki Ruiz has introduced a bill in the Oregon Legislature that would require public schools and colleges to provide feminine hygiene products free to students.
The bill would make menstrual products available in all middle and high schools, community colleges, public universities and public charter schools at zero cost to the attending students, Ruiz said.
House Bill 3294, The Menstrual Dignity Act, was introduced by Ruiz and six other chief sponsors and 10 regular sponsors.
This is one of the first bills that 26-year-old Ruiz (D-Gresham) is shepherding through the legislature. Ruiz also sits on the Reynolds School District school board. ....
