HRW urges Philippine gov't to ditch plan to arm civilians

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Thursday called on the Philippine government to drop its plan to organize new militias as it opposed the suggestion of arming anti-crime civilian volunteers.
In a statement, the HRW said the plan would only lead to more human rights abuses in the country.
“The Philippine government should immediately drop its plan to organize new militias that would worsen the country’s disastrous human rights situation,” the HRW said.
It added that the country has a long history of arming civilians in militias or other organized groups that have been responsible for extrajudicial killings, torture, and other rights violations committed with impunity. ....

As a veteran broadcast journalist, Jessica Soho has witnessed many important moments in history.
That includes the tail end of President Ferdinand Marcos regime in the Philippines, back when she was still early in her career as a news reporter for GMA Network.
In the pilot episode of The Howie Severino Podcast, Jessica shared a snippet of her coverage of the late dictator during the campaign for the 1986 Snap Elections against Corazon Aquino.
He was in the middle of a speech in Caloocan and then he stopped. He just suddenly stopped and he disappeared from the stage. When he came back out, he was being carried by people, she said in a mix of English and Filipino. ....

SHARING the same birth date as National Artist and folk dance pioneer Francisca Reyes Aquino is fellow National Artist, poet, literary historian, and critic Virgilio Almario!
Almario who goes by the pseudonym Rio Alma was born on March 9, 1944 in Camias, San Miguel, Bulacan.
Before he became a National Artist of the Philippines, an artist, poet, critic, renowned translator, and cultural manager, he was an AB Political Science student in the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman. He finished his degree in 1963.
In 1967, he released his first collection of poems titled “Makinasyon at Ilang Tula.”
According to UP, Almario was blacklisted by the military during the years of Martial Law under former President Ferdinand Marco because he was an activist. During this period, he dedicated his time and focus to studying the history and tradition of Philippine literature. ....
